The Emerald City of Oz
Title: The Emerald City of Oz Author: Frank Baum Category: Adventure, Children, Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-18 Ebook format: .PDF Description: Author's Note
Perhaps I should admit on the title page that this book is "By L. Frank Baum and his correspondents," for I have used many suggestions conveyed to me in letters from children. Once on a time I really imagined myself "an author of fairy tales," but now I am merely an editor or private secretary for a host of youngsters whose ideas I am requestsed to weave into the thread of my stories.
These ideas are often clever. They are also logical and interesting. So I have used them whenever I could find an opportunity, and it is but just that I acknowledge my indebtedness to my little friends.
My, what imaginations these children have developed! Sometimes I am fairly astounded by their daring and genius. There will be no lack of fairy-tale authors in... Read More... OR

The Patchwork Girl of Oz
The Patchwork Girl of Oz
Title: The Patchwork Girl of Oz Author: Frank Baum Category: Adventure, Children, Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-18 Ebook format: .PDF Description: Prologue
Through the kindness of Dorothy Gale of Kansas, afterward Princess Dorothy of Oz, an humble writer in the United States of America was once appointed Royal Historian of Oz, with the privilege of writing the chronicle of that wonderful fairyland. But after making six books about the adventures of those interesting but queer people who live in the Land of Oz, the Historian learned with sorrow that by an edict of the Supreme Ruler, Ozma of Oz, her country would thereafter be rendered invisible to all who lived outside its borders and that all communication with Oz would, in the future, be cut off.
The children who had learned to look for the books about Oz and who loved the stories about the gay and happy people inhabiting that favored country, were as... Read More... OR

Tik-Tok of Oz
Tik-Tok of Oz
Title: Tik-Tok of Oz Author: Frank Baum Category: Adventure, Children, Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-18 Ebook format: .PDF Description: To My Readers
The very marked success of my last year's fairy book, "The Patchwork Girl of Oz," convinces me that my readers like the Oz stories "best of all," as one little girl wrote me. So here, my dears, is a new Oz story in which is introduced Ann Soforth, the Queen of Oogahoo, whom Tik-Tok assisted in conquering our old acquaintance, the Nome Kin. It also tells of Betsy Bobin and how, after many adventures, she finally reached the marvelous Land of Oz.
There is a play called "The Tik-Tok Man of Oz," hut it is not like this story of "Tik-Tok of Oz," although some of the adventures recorded in this book, as well as those in several other Oz hooks, are included in the play. Those who have seen the play and those who have read the other Oz hooks will find... Read More... OR

The Frank Baum Collection
The Frank Baum Collection
Title: The Frank Baum Collection Author: Frank Baum Category: Adventure, Children, Classic Price: $7.95 Date Added: 2006-02-18 Ebook format: .ZIP Description: American journalist and writer, whose best-known book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Baum's stories about the imaginary Land of Oz belong to the classics of fantasy literature. The Oz series was long shunned by librarians, and neglected by scholars of children's literature. Baum has often been compared to Lewis Carroll - they both had a girl as a protagonist in their most famous works.
L. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, as the son of the oil magnate Benjamin Ward Baum and Cynthia (Stanton) Baum, a women's rights activist. He was privately tutored at home and spent two years at Peekskill Military Academy (1868-69).
In 1873 Barrie became a reporter on the New York World. Two years later he founded the New Era weekly in Pennsylvania. He was... Read More... OR

Bleak House
Bleak House
Title: Bleak House Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: PREFACE
A Chancery judge once had the kindness to inform me, as one of a company of some hundred and fifty men and women not labouring under any suspicions of lunacy, that the Court of Chancery, though the shining subject of much popular prejudice (at which point I thought the judge's eye had a cast in my direction), was almost immaculate. There had been, he admitted, a trivial blemish or so in its rate of progress, but this was exaggerated and had been entirely owing to the "parsimony of the public," which guilty public, it appeared, had been until lately bent in the most determined manner on by no means enlarging the number of Chancery judges appointed--I believe by Richard the Second, but any other king will do as well.
This seemed to me too profound a joke... Read More... OR

Barnaby Rudge
Barnaby RudgeA TALE OF THE RIOTS OF 'EIGHTY
Title: Barnaby Rudge Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: PREFACE
The late Mr Waterton having, some time ago, expressed his opinion that ravens are gradually becoming extinct in England, I offered the few following words about my experience of these birds.
The raven in this story is a compound of two great originals, of whom I was, at different times, the proud possessor. The first was in the bloom of his youth, when he was discovered in a modest retirement in London, by a friend of mine, and given to me. He had from the first, as Sir Hugh Evans says of Anne Page, 'good gifts', which he improved by study and attention in a most exemplary manner. He slept in a stable--generally on horseback--and so terrified a Newfoundland dog by his preternatural sagacity, that he has been known, by the mere superiority of his... Read More... OR

The Battle of Life
The Battle of Life
Title: The Battle of Life Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: CHAPTER I - Part The First
Once upon a time, it matters little when, and in stalwart England, it matters little where, a fierce battle was fought. It was fought upon a long summer day when the waving grass was green. Many a wild flower formed by the Almighty Hand to be a perfumed goblet for the dew, felt its enamelled cup filled high with blood that day, and shrinking dropped. Many an insect deriving its delicate colour from harmless leaves and herbs, was stained anew that day by dying men, and marked its frightened way with an unnatural track. The painted butterfly took blood into the air upon the edges of its wings. The stream ran red. The trodden ground became a quagmire, whence, from sullen pools collected in the prints of human feet and horses' hoofs, the... Read More... OR

A Child's History of England
A Child's History of England
Title: A Child's History of England Author: Charles Dickens Category: Children, Classic, History Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: CHAPTER I - ANCIENT ENGLAND AND THE ROMANS
IF you look at a Map of the World, you will see, in the left-hand upper corner of the Eastern Hemisphere, two Islands lying in the sea. They are England and Scotland, and Ireland. England and Scotland form the greater part of these Islands. Ireland is the next in size. The little neighbouring islands, which are so small upon the Map as to be mere dots, are chiefly little bits of Scotland, - broken off, I dare say, in the course of a great length of time, by the power of the restless water.
In the old days, a long, long while ago, before Our Saviour was born on earth and lay asleep in a manger, these Islands were in the same place, and the stormy sea roared round them, just as it roars now. But the sea was not alive,... Read More... OR

The Chimes
The Chimes
Title: The Chimes Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: FIRST QUARTER
There are not many people -- and as it is desirable
that a story-teller and a story-reader should establish
a mutual understanding as soon as possible, I beg it
to be noticed that I confine this observation neither to
young people nor to little people, but extend it to all
conditions of people: little and big, young and old:
yet growing up, or already growing down again -- there
are not, I say, many people who would care to sleep
in a church. I don't mean at sermon-time in warm
weather (when the thing has actually been done, once
or twice), but in the night, and alone. A great multi-
tude of persons will be violently astonished, I know,
by this position, in the broad bold Day. But it
applies to Night. It must be argued by night, and... Read More... OR

The Cricket on the Hearth
The Cricket on the Hearth
Title: The Cricket on the Hearth Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: CHAPTER I - Chrip the First
THE kettle began it! Don't tell me what Mrs. Peerybingle said. I know better. Mrs. Peerybingle may leave it on record to the end of time that she couldn't say which of them began it; but, I say the kettle did. I ought to know, I hope! The kettle began it, full five minutes by the little waxy-faced Dutch clock in the corner, before the Cricket uttered a chirp.
As if the clock hadn't finished striking, and the convulsive little Haymaker at the top of it, jerking away right and left with a scythe in front of a Moorish Palace, hadn't mowed down half an acre of imaginary grass before the Cricket joined in at all!
Why, I am not naturally positive. Every one knows that. I wouldn't set my own opinion against the opinion of Mrs.... Read More... OR

David Copperfield
David Copperfield
Title: David Copperfield Author: Charles Dickens Category: Classic Price: $3.00 Date Added: 2006-02-17 Ebook format: .PDF Description: PREFACE TO 1850 EDITION
I do not find it easy to get sufficiently far away from this Book, in the first sensations of having finished it, to refer to it with the composure which this formal heading would seem to require. My interest in it, is so recent and strong; and my mind is so divided between pleasure and regret - pleasure in the achievement of a long design, regret in the separation from many companions - that I am in danger of wearying the reader whom I love, with personal confidences, and private emotions.
Besides which, all that I could say of the Story, to any purpose, I have endeavoured to say in it.
It would concern the reader little, perhaps, to know, how sorrowfully the pen is laid down at the close of a two-years' imaginative task; or how an... Read More... OR
